Tuesday's With Corey (Episode 5)
2009-11-23

This weekly feature ‘Tuesdays with Corey’ is inspired by a book called ‘Tuesdays with Morrie’, written by the famous author Mitch Albom. In this motivational true story, Mitch reflects with his old university professor, Morey, about life lessons and how to live your life to the fullest.
This is Coach Crocker’s favourite book. Every Tuesday, Corey will give Rambler fans his personal thoughts of the past games and other related topics. He will also post his favourite weekly motivational quote and a tip for all young hockey players to use in practice. Enjoy!!!
Episode 5– Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2009
Hello Fans,
I hope you enjoy this feature ‘Tuesdays with Corey’. I am really excited to do this weekly feature and thanks for supporting our team.
I had originally said that there would be no “Tuesday’s With Corey” this week but I decided to do it considering I have time while I wait to catch my flight to Ontario. I am heading on a recruiting trip to Ontario and USA.
This past weekend was spent in the cold rinks of Moncton trying to find the next Rambler. Thirty five major and minor midget teams travelled to Moncton to participate in the 29th Monctonian Challenge. This tournament is very important for our hockey club as players from this tournament will potentially make up our team in either a draft pick or a trade. It is very important that with recruiting that I see all players to make sure we are drafting or trading for the right player and person. I also had an opportunity to meet with present draft picks of the Ramblers who are playing on various AAA midget teams about their plans for next season. All players (except one) of the present day Ramblers participated in the Monctonian at some point in either the major level or minor level.
I would like to congratulate the Cumberland County AA Minor Midget team on a very good showing at the Monctonian. Great job guys!!!
A part of being a GM and Head Coach at the Junior A level means that sometimes one title has to sacrifice for the other. It’s never easy to be absent behind the bench but with John Cater and Tim Ripley in charge (two former Head Coaches in the MJAHL) it wasn’t a hard decision for the coaching staff to make. We never got the results we wanted on Thursday and Saturday but from the reports I received from the coaching staff, both games were improvements from recent games in the past. The team worked extremely hard in both outings this week and executed the game plan we put in place. From what I can gather from John Carter the fans that made the trip to Truro on Saturday night were not disappointed with how the Ramblers played. With less than 30 seconds left in the game Dana Fraser put the Bearcats ahead 3-2 to take the win. A typical battle against the Bearcats!!!
Final thoughts on the weekend – We are not happy as a group that we did not get any points. Not happy at all but we all have to stay positive and keep working hard to improve.
With very important deadline dates approaching I will be travelling to different parts of Ontario and the United States this week scouting different leagues trying to recruit future Ramblers. John Carter, Tim Ripley, and Jeff Lewis will be at the helm this week as we plan to beat Troy Ryan’s Lions on Thursday. I will be looking forward to getting back behind the bench on Saturday as we battle the Dieppe Commandos at the Amherst Stadium at 7:00pm.
‘QUOTE OF THE WEEK’
“I NEVER FELT I WAS PLAYING IN WAYNE GRETZKY’S SHADOW…. I HAD A RESPONSIBILITY ON THE TEAM THAT WAS DIFFERENT FROM WAYNE’S. EVERYONE HAD HIS ROLE AND I FELT GREAT ABOUT MINE. SO DID MANY OTHERS ABOUT THEIRS. IF WE WON, AND WON OFTEN, WE KNEW EVERYONE WOULD GET RESPECT.” – MARK MESSIER
‘FUTURE RAMBLERS PRACTICE TIP’
TAPING YOUR STICK
- Use non-grip tape for the butt of the stick.
- Make sure to make a knob on the butt of your stick, this helps when you drop it and have to pick it up with your gloves on during play. Goalies, make your knob larger than normal to keep your stick from flying when you attempt a poke check.
- Goalies, do not use black tape for the knob on the butt of our stick. This can easily be mistaken for a puck by the ref. Use white or some other bright coloured tape.
- Forwards and Defense, I would use white tape if you're going to tape down the butt of the stick for grip reasons. This will keep the palms of your gloves from getting black.
- When taping the blade of your stick, start at the toe, wrap around once, then tape toward the heel. This prevents those annoying tape flaps when the bottom starts to wear out.
Late last week I was asked by a minor hockey player how to tape his stick. I really never thought about that before so I hope the tip above helps. Good luck to all minor hockey players this week. Work hard and have fun!!!
I would like to thank Rothesay Netherwood Private School and the Central Ice Pak Major Midget team for coming to Amherst last Tuesday and playing an exhibition game. I hope you enjoyed your stay in Amherst.
Hope you enjoyed this week’s episode. Once again, thanks for your continued support. See you all in the Jungle on Saturday, Nov. 28th, 2009 as we battle the Dieppe Commandos at 7:00pm.
Yours in Hockey,
CC
